An interesting uniface mint error

Anastasius I, 491-518. Follis (Bronze, 20 mm, 4.36 g), uniface mint error, Constantinopolis, 498-518. Blank. Rev. Large M flanked by two eight-pointed stars; above, cross; below, Γ; in exergue, CON. DOC 20c. MIB 23. SB 16. Attractive earthen deposits. Very fine.

This uniface mint error probably resulted from an unstruck flan being stuck in between the coin and the obverse die. Uniface mint errors of Byzantine coins are extremely rare: in the case of this example, the reverse belongs to a post-reform small module follis of Anastasius I
